1. Evolution of Colombia's Film Market




  • The total number of spectators grew by 7.3% during 2012, for a total of 2,836,000 more spectators than in 2011.




  • The attendance per inhabitant index rose by 6% in 2012.







  • In 2012, Colombian box office figures rose by 11% in pesos over 2011, or by 15% when calculated in US dollars.



  • The number of releases in Colombia has stabilized at more than 200 since 2008.



  • More Colombian productions were released in commercial theaters in 2012 than ever before, reaching a record 23 releases.
  • Five more Colombian films were released in 2012 than in 2011.



* Multiplex or Complex: Commercial location, open to the public, with more than two projection screens
** Screen: an installation comprised of a smooth surface upon which a film may be projected.

  • The number of movie screens and complexes rose by 9.5% and 18% respectively in 2012.



  • The number of screens located in “Others” (rest of the country) rose by 3% in 2012 for a total 40% share of screens.



  • Attendance at films in principal cities as well as in the rest of the country increased as follows in 2012: Cali 9%, Bogotá 6%, Barranquilla 6%, Medellin 0.42%, and the rest of the country by 11%.
  • Of the total number of people who attended films in 2012, 42% were in Bogotá, 10% in Cali, 9% in Medellin, 4% in Barranquilla and 34% in the rest of the country.
