5. Special Film Statistics Report


According to the Film Information and Records System (SIREC, for its Spanish acronym), under the direction of the Colombian Ministry of Culture, exhibitors in Colombia report a total of 749 screens (June 30, 2013).

The following report provides an overview of the digitalization process in Colombia during the first semester of 2013, based on information provided by the five principal film exhibitors in Colombia, representing 80% of the market, or 600 screens. There has been a significant increase in the transformation to digital among these exhibitors in the past year and a half.

The remaining 149 screens are those of small exhibitors (9-16 screens), not-for-profits (1-2 screens) and single-screen exhibitors. An estimated 20% of medium and small-scale exhibitors are advancing in the digitalization process in their theaters.




  • 73.5% of the 600 screens are digital.
  • Total number of screens grew by 7.6% from 2011-2012 and by 6.01% from December 2012 to June 2013.
  • This is an increase of 72.27% in digital screens between 2012 and the first semester of 2013, while the number of 35mm screens fell by 48.71%.




  • In the first semester of 2013, the number of digital screens rose by 72.2% for a total of 185 screens.
  • 228 of these digital screens are 3D (June 30, 2013), an increase of 58 screens, or 34%, between January to June.
  • Of the 15 largest box office successes in 2012, 12 were released in 3D.
  • Of the five biggest box office successes during the first semester of 2013, four were released in 3D and represented 28.61% of total box office sales in 2013.



  • Cine Colombia is the exhibitor with the greatest number of digital screens with a market share of 54.65% during the first semester of 2013, followed by Cinemark with a market share of 22.22%, Cinepolis with 9.75%, Royal Films with 9.3% and Procinal and Multicines 4.08%.
  • During the first semester of 2013, Royal Films experienced the greatest increase in the number of digital screens (173% growth), followed by Cinemark with 92% and Cinecolombia with close to 80%.




  • Cine Colombia remains the leader in 3D screens in the country (85). It is worth noting that Royal Films and Cinemark have incresed the number of 3D screens since 2011, with 14.9% and 34.21% market shares, respectively.





  • In Barranquilla, Cinecolombia and Royal Films alone have digital screens.
  • The largest share of digital screens in the country’s principal cities still belongs to Cine Colombia: Bogotá (67.4%), Medellín (68.2%) Cali (64.8%) and Bucaramanga (50%).  
  • In cities like Barranquilla, Royal Films is the leader, with a 53.8% share.
  • In other cities, Cinecolombia has a 26.5% share, having lost ground to Cinemark and Royal Films in these cities (40.7% and 18.6% share of digital screens, respecitvely).



  • All exhibitors are present In Bogotá: Cinecolombia (53.7%), Cinemark (20.7%), Procinal (14.6%) Cinepolis (8.5%) and Royal Films (2.4%).
  • The greatest share of 3D screens in the country’s principal cities belongs to Cine Colombia: Bogotá (53.7%), Medellín (42.9%) and Cali (59.1%). In Barranquilla and Bucaramanga, Cine Colombia has the second largest share (42.9% and 33,3%, respectively).
  • In Barranquilla , Royal Films owns 57.1% of screens.
  • In Bucaramanga, Cinemark is the leader with 57.1%, as well as in “other cities” with 54.7%.
