2. EVOLUTION OF COLOMBIAN FILM INDUSTRY

  • A record high of 18 Colombian films were released in 2011.
  • These 18 releases represent more than twice the number of releases in the previous 5 years and more than triple the releases in the past 8 years.
  • From 2000-2010 an average 8 Colombian films were released annually.

  • Attendance at Colombian films in 2011 was considerable, with approximately 3 million spectators.
  • An increase of approximately 1.5 million compared to the previous year due primarily to the success of «El Paseo» (1.189.607 spectators in 2011) and to attendance at other successful films.
  • In a single year attendance at Colombian films nearly doubled.

  • Percentage of Colombian films reached a record high in 2011 when a total of 8.5% of all releases were Colombian.
  • The index for 2011 represents an increase of 77% over the previous year; this all-time high confirms distributor and exhibitor confidence in national productions.

  • The convergence of these two indicators demonstrates that the number of spectators at Colombian films is proportionate to number of releases, based on the 18 films released in 2011 (more than one per month).

  • The biggest box office successes tend to be G-rated animated 3D films.
  • In the past 5 years, one Colombian film achieved this ranking: «Paraiso Travel» in 2008.

  • «El paseo» became one of the biggest box office successes in Colombian film history (seventh in the top ten) having achieved the all-time largest audience and box office figures for Colombian films if ticket sales from December 25, 2010 forward are added to those for 2011, surpassing even «Paraíso Travel», the 2008 box office leader.
  • Add to this «Los colores de la montaña» (No. 25), «El Páramo» (No. 29) and «El jefe» (No. 31) all with more than 300.000 spectators.
