THE SONG OF THE AURICANTURI
Rocío returns from the city to her hometown in the Colombian countryside to look for her mother, whom she has not heard from since she was a young girl. There is a past to uncover and Rocío must decipher it from her mother Alba, who has not spoken since the murder of Rocío’s father. In response to her questions, Rocío receives only silence from her Alba. This prompts Rocío to look for answers elsewhere, particularly in an old game that she played with her mother when she was a child where they would bury or hide objects in the form of religious offerings to ask for certain wishes to come true. As Rocío unearths these long lost objects, she finds clues to the questions she arrived with. They are questions about her past, but also about her future; Rocío is pregnant and deliberating whether to keep the child. Alba, on the other hand, has silently created a fantastical world as a way to overcome the pain of her loss. Day after day, she constructs a nest of cloth and yarn to hatch an egg of a bird, whose gentle song, she believes, carries the promise to keep Rocío and her progeny safe.
