When I was 17 years old and had decided I wanted to study filmmaking, my grandmother Martha gave me a journal and four audiotapes and said: "Look, here is your first film".
The journal contained anecdotes about the abuse my grandfather Amando had inflicted on her, and the tapes contained the audios she recorded when he came home drunk to threaten her. In 2004, after 39 years of marriage, my grandmother managed to divorce Amando. The journal and the tapes were the evidence she used to sue him. However, she is still not free from him, nor from family or social pressures. Our family organizes meetings where they insist that she interacts with him, and Amando treats her as if they were still husband and wife. Determined to free herself, my grandmother proposed that I show the journal and tapes to our family so that they would understand what she experienced. She also decided to give Amando a letter in which she asked him to stop treating her as his wife. After this, he became distant. In this way, it seems that my grandmother managed to break what she herself has called a chain of family abuse.
