Synopsis
December 24th dawns on “La Alsacia”, the De La Concha family estate. Sofia, the clan matriarch, has invited her extended family to celebrate Christmas. The gathering includes her son Bernardo, the unscrupulous stock trader; his sister Rosario, the anachronistic Marxist figure; their brother Alvaro, the jolly drunkard, and Esmeralda, Alvaro’s wife and Bernardo’s mistress. The family is bankrupt, but only Bernardo is aware of this: in a final attempt to save their opulent lifestyle, he has staked the family estate in a risky deal with Uldarico, a shady politician and Esmeralda’s father. On Christmas morning the deal goes sour and, unless Bernardo does something, Uldarico will join the Christmas party, uninvited, to claim his property. Meanwhile, the family clings to their fond memories of yesteryear, denying reality in the same way they have refused to acknowledge the house’s collapsing plumbing. Evening arrives and sewage begins to emerge from broken pipes. As the clock ticks closer to midnight, the mansion gradually becomes a stinking cesspit while the characters merge and collide, increasingly closer to a fate they can no longer avoid.
