Synopsis
José María is a builder; Rosa, a live-in housekeeper. They’re South American immigrants working in Spain and have been together for a few weeks. When Rosa’s employer take a trip, José María comes to spend a few days with her. He fantasises about their life together. José María has an argument that triggers a violent encounter with his foreman, which ende with the “accidental” death of the latter. José María escapes to the mansion where Rosa works, without telling anyone, not even Rosa, what he’s done and where he is. José María starts a secret life, stealing food in the night. This is made easier by the fact that only an elderly couple, Señor and Señora Torres, live in the mansión and are alone after their children left some time before. The whole of the third floor and the attic lies untouched and unobserved. When the police question Rosa, she knows nothing, and the sudden disappearance of her boyfriend bewilders her. José María listens to everything. He will have to remain hidden, with the rats that plague the house as his only company. Little by little, José María witnesses the lives of Sr and Sra Torres and their family, and observes the daily routines of Rosa’s working life. The family loves Rosa very much, but she is also the victim of both verbal and physical abuse. José María discovers that the house has a second phone line and calls Rosa without telling her that he’s there, so close by. They start a new “long distance” relationship, where both long for the day when they will be together again. This desire is further intensified when José María discovers that Rosa is expecting his baby. The love between the two develops, contrasting with the life of the Torres family, where all the relationships between two people are narrated through failed and sick relationships. The only hope that shines through is Rosa and José María’s impossible love. Rosa’s belly grows and José María becomes gradually thinner, as his heart, mind and body get increasingly sick with solitude.
