Alejandro Landes
Director, producer, and screenwriter. Born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1980 of a Colombian mother and Ecuatorian father, he studied political economy at Brown University. He has been selected for the Cinefondation residence at Cannes and the Sundance Writers and Directors Lab. He has written for The Miami Herald and the television show Oppenheimer Presenta.
His latest feature film Monos received the Special Jury Award for Originality in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival. As director, screenwriter, and producer, Landes celebrated alongside Alexis Dos Santos for script and Fernando Epstein, Santiago Zapata, and Cristina Landes for production.
His first film Cocalero had its premiere at Sundance in 2007 and was screened commercially in cinemas in Colombia, Spain, United States, Argentina, Bolivia, Uruguay, Venezuela, Chile, Mexico, Greece, Brazil, France, Holland, Belgium, and Ecuador. The documentary was also part of the New York Human Rights Film Festival Official Selection, Busan International Film Festival, Guadalajara International Film Festival, Rio de Janeiro Film Festival, Filmfest München, BritDoc, Mar del Plata International Film Festival, and Miami International Film Festival. In 2007 it received the SUR Award for Best Argentine Documentary.
Porfirio, his first fiction film, had its world premiere at the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes in 2011. It was also part of the official selection of the festivals in Toronto, Busan, and San Sebastian. It received the Best Film award in the World Cinema section of the Amsterdam festival, the Cinedecouverte award from the King of Belgium’s Cinematek, the Best Actor and Grand Jury awards in Biarritz, and the Bronze Alexander award at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival.
It also took the Best Director award at the Orquídea Film Festival in Cuenca, the Innovation award at UNASUR, the Golden Peacock for Best Film at the forty-second India International Film Festival, and Best Film at Festivalissimo Montréal. At the Cartagena Film Festival (FICCI) it took the Best Ibero-American Director, Best Colombian Director, and Best Colombian Film awards.
