The 52nd Cartagena International Film Festival (FICCI), which took place February 23-29, paid tribute to Italian-American actor/producer/director/writer Isabella Rossellini. The ENCOUNTERS training events at the Cartagena festival this year included the 6th Film Critics Workshop and the Producing Film Exhibits and Festivals Seminar.

Winning co-productions last December at the recent Latin Side of the Doc in Buenos Aires, Argentina included Benghazi: historias desde frente no armado (Colombia, France) produced by 996 Films, Jorge Sanjinés: El coraje de un cine junto al pueblo (Bolivia, Colombia, Mexico) produced by Producciones Nuestro Cine, Puerto Alvira produced by Medio de Contención Producciones and Monte Adentro (Colombia, Argentina) by Nicolas Macario Alonso.

After its New York premiere on October 25, 2011, Colbert Garcia’s Silencio en el paraíso was released in Colombia on November 25th. Ricardo Coral-Dorado’s Postales colombianas hit Colombian screens on November 18th. Both features were awarded Colombia’s Film Development Fund (FDC) grants for Feature Post-Production.

The 33rd New Latin American Film Festival in Havana, Cuba closed on December 11th with a tribute to Colombian Nobel Gabriel García Márquez. The tribute to the author of 100 Years of Solitude included screenings of films he wrote and others inspired by his literary works. Chilean painter Roberto Matta and director Humberto Solás also had tributes at this year’s festival.
