Colombian films selected for Hot Docs, North America’s largest documentary festival and market, include the animated feature Pequeñas voces (Little voices) by Jairo Carrillo and Oscar Andrade, the Belgian-Colombian co-production Los abrazos del río (The River’s Embraces) by Nicolás Rincón Gille in the World Showcase program, and the documentary feature Siete días siete noches (working title) by director German Piffano in the Hot Docs Forum. The festival takes place from April 28 – May 8 and the Forum is scheduled for May 4-5.

On March 3, the animated film Chico y Rita by Fernando Trueba, Javier Mariscal and Tono Errando closed the 51st Cartagena International Film Festival (FICCI), the oldest film festival in Latin America and the most important in Colombia. During the closing ceremonies awards announced in a press conference the previous day were presented to films in the various categories.

Colombian Luisa Casas was among the winners at the recent Sundance Festival. The producer, who resides in Atlanta (USA), co-produced the film To.get.her written and directed by Erica Dunton. The film was a winner in the festival’s recently created Next category reserved for low-budget films. Another winner at the world’s most important independent film festival was Colombian Diego Jimenez who won the World Cinema Cinematography Award for Carlos Moreno’s Todos tus muertos.

Thanks to a joint initiative by film producers RCN Televisión, e-NNOVVA, Caracol Televisión, Tango Discos and Cineplex, 16 of the most representative Colombian films released in recent years went on the market on February 21, 2011 in leading stores around the country. All the films are subtitled in English and most of them include behind-the-scenes features as well as still photos, soundtracks, trailers, music videos and other extras.
