Conceived as an extension of the festivals in Viña del Mar (1967 and 1969), Merida (1968 and 1977), and Caracas (1974) —which brought together films and filmmakers from the most innovative cinematographic trends in Latin America— the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema responded to an urgent request for a regular meeting of the continent's cinematographies and creators. Since its creation, the festival has sought to recognize and share the cinematographic works that enrich and reaffirm the Latin American and Caribbean cultural identities with their significance and artistic values.

Colombian participation in 2022 was quite extensive. Los reyes del mundo (The Kings of the world) by Laura Mora, the Colombian-Cuban co-production Bajo un sol poderoso (Under a powerful sun) by Kike Álvarez, and So Much Tenderness by Colombian director Lina Rodríguez were part of the Fiction Feature Competition.

Todo incluido (All-inclusive) by Duván Duque Vargas and Golem by Andrés Jiménez Quintero were in the Fiction Short Film Competition. The short film (Sin asunto) ((No subject)) by Guillermo Moncayo participated in the Documentary Competition, as well as the feature films Cantos que inundan el río (Singings Flooding the River) by Luckas Perro, Anhell69 by Theo Montoya and Nuestra película (Our movie) by Diana Bustamante.

The Animation Competition included the short films La Sixtina (The Sistine) by Juan Camilo Fonnegra, Todas mis cicatrices se desvanecen en el viento (All My Scars Fade in the Wind) by Carlos Velandia and Angélica Restrepo, Yugo by Carlos Gómez Salamanca, SEK BUY by William Cayapur, and the feature film La otra forma (The other shape) by Diego Guzmán Ramírez.

In the Opera Prima Competition were La jauría (The Pack) by Andrés Ramírez Pulido, Amparo by Simón Mesa Soto, and Un varón (A male) by Fabián Hernández. La Jauría received the Coral Award for Artistic Contribution in Opera Prima, while Un varón won the Arrecife Award.

In the Industry Section, the Coral Postproduction Award went to Felipe H. Caro's La suprema (The supreme). This film competed alongside Iván D. Gaona's Adiós al amigo (Goodbye to the friend) and Diego González Cruz's Barbitch. In this same section, Camilo Torres Restrepo, el amor eficaz (Camilo Torres Restrepo, effective love), by Marta Rodríguez and Fernando Restrepo, will have a special presentation in the Entornos Program.

Los niños del agua (Children of the water) by Jorge Augusto Villa Arcila took part in the Screenplay Competition. The Posters in Competition section featured the Colombian pieces from the 20th Bogotá Short Film Festival - Bogoshorts, created by Jaime E. Manrique and Juan Esteban Duque, and Hermanas (Sisters), created by Johnattan Ríos Valencia - Nattan.
