Pantalla Colombia No.: 123agosto 15 - septiembre 30 / 2023
Colombia is represented at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival, scheduled from September 7 to 17, with two films. La Suprema (The Supreme), directed by Felipe Holguín Caro, features in the Official Discovery Selection, while La Perra, directed by Carla Melo, is part of the festival's short film section.
Founded in 1976, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is one of the world's most prestigious film festivals. Recently, it has gained a reputation for launching films that later stand out in the Oscar race. This year's TIFF will showcase 60 films that will be part of the Galas and Special Presentations programs.
La Suprema, directed by Felipe Holguín Caro and produced by Tere Gaviria and Diana Pérez Mejía, is part of the Official Discovery Selection, where it competes for the People's Choice Award and the Platform Prize Award. The feature film tells the story of Laureana, an Afro-Colombian teenager living in La Suprema who dreams of becoming a boxer. With a mix of drama and humor, the film speaks of the courage and persistence of a community that struggles both for better conditions and to get on the map.
This production is a collaboration between Cumbia Films, Ferviente Films, Telepacífico, and HD Cinema Colombia, with additional support from Labo Digital Colombia, La Tina Sonido, Mapalé Films, Olehada Films, and Artesanos de Luz. It's a recipient of the Fondo para el Desarrollo Cinematográfico - FDC in the Regional Stories category, making it the first film in this category to have an international premiere.
Director Felipe Holguín shares, "La Suprema reflects on the countless individuals living in challenging circumstances who choose not to succumb to tragedy but face their reality with hope and resilience. These people aren't limited to Colombia but can be found throughout Latin America and around the world."
As for the Short Cuts section, featuring 42 short films from 23 countries and supported by the Ontario Arts Council, it has been a platform for discovering emerging talents such as Charlotte Wells (Aftersun), Saim Sadiq (Joyland), and Luis De Filippis (Algo que dijiste anoche / Something You Said Last Night) in recent years. The film La perra, directed by Carla Melo Gampert and supported by the FDC's Short Filmmaking category, has its North American premiere following its inclusion in the Official Selection of the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival.
La perra is a collaborative production between Evidencia Films and June Films, coproduced with Arte France. The film involved several contributors, including Andrea Muñoz in animation and inking; Julián Arias, Gabriela Otálora, Sergio Román, and Paola Cuéllar in color and inking; Santiago Guevara and Pablo Quiroga in artistic research; Juan Camilo Fonnegra in composition; Juan Sebastián Quebrada in editing, Juan Andrés Urueña in directing assistance, Juan Camilo González in animation assistance; Ana Winograd in production direction; Juanma López and Daniel Giraldo in sound design; and José Valenzuela in sound mixing, among others.
The short film has also received an Animation Creation Grant from the Instituto Distrital de las Artes (Idartes) and the Aide avant réalisation from the Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée (CNC) of France.
