Another edition of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival has ended. Colombia had an outstanding presence in the MIFA market, where two productions received awards.
The Annecy International Animation Film Festival was held in France from June 9 to 15. In addition to its competitions, the event facilitates discussions with animation industry professionals and hosts exhibitions in venues such as the Médiathèque Bonlieu and the Museum of Animated Film, among others. The festival celebrates animated cinema, and in its most recent edition, Colombia was represented in both the short and feature film competitions and on the jury.
The short film Adult Swim the Cute Cat ID, directed and written by Silvia Prietov and produced by Lucy Animation Studios, participated in the Festival competition- commissioned films section. In a picturesque landscape, a cat chases a fly in an epic battle of wits. Incredible transformations allow the cat to defeat the virus, catch the fly, and finish with a special grooming session. This is the premise of this 2D computer-animated production.
Two co-productions competed in the Market Competition-Mifa Pitches, the market component of the festival. The feature film My Dad the Truck, directed by María Cristina Pérez and produced by Pez Dorado Animaciones, Sacrebleu Producciones, Mauricio Cuervo , and Ron Dyens, is a co-production with France and Spain. After losing everything, Bonifacio, a clumsy farmer, travels to the city with his daughter Hilda to pursue his dream of becoming a truck driver. This is the story of this journey. The techniques used in its realization include painting on glass, among others. The feature film was the winner of a Cicliq Awards Development Residency.
Also in the same section was the film Kolaval, directed by Karla Velázquez and produced by Dinamita Animación, Julián Sánchez, and Cristina Cuevas, a co-production with Mexico. Nichim, a warrior born among the embroiderers, escapes her arranged marriage to avoid a violent invasion. Guided by legends, she enters a mystical forest with a dubious demon in search of the power of a goddess to repair her village and find women's freedom. This 2D computer-animated feature film won the award for Best Pitch in the festival's Industry section.
The jury for this year's festival feature film competition included Adriana García Galán, a Colombian composer, visual artist, and teacher. Her musical work has been featured in productions such as Virus Tropical (Tropical Virus, 2018), a film that benefited from the Film Development Fund - FDC in 2012 and 2016. Among its awards, the film received the Macondo Award for Best Original Song. García Galán has also created original music for other works, such as the short films Uyuyui (2010) and La montaña (The Mountain, 2018), and films such as Ventana de Tiempo (Time Window, 2020). Portuguese actress Leonor Silveira and French producer Ilan Urroz were the other jury members for the festival's feature film competition.
Finally, Proimágenes Colombia and Procolombia supported the Colombian delegation at the Annecy International Animation Film Market, participating with stand C18 in the exhibition area. The two organizations (Proimágenes through the Colombian Film Commission) also helped representatives of 20 Colombian production companies to attend the event.
